Redefining Family
Posted on by Destiny Girard, LMFT

Family is defined as the people that we are blood related to.
They are the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that are supposed to care, love and support us through the obstacles of life. But for many people, their family of origin is a source of stress, tension, pain or trauma.
For these individuals, being around family yields more negative emotions than positive ones. The family system becomes a network of painful or unhealthy relationships. If an individual has tried time and time again to repair family relationships to no avail and they continue to get hurt, then it may be in their best interest to redefine who they see as family. A family of choice are the people that we choose to be in our lives-those that love, support and help to care for us during times of need. These individuals can be anyone, from members of our family of origin to friends, colleagues, neighbors or anyone else that seemingly has our best interest at heart. What is most important at the end of each day is not how we are connected to the people around us, but that we ARE connected to healthy and supportive people. Redefining our relationships and our idea of family is what can allow people to truly thrive and strive to live the best version of their life possible.
