Date Night Compromise

Date Night Compromise

Some couples share common interests and hobbies, while others do not. As a couples therapist, I frequently hear couples tell me that they struggle to find things to do during their quality time together. One partner may love to do something, while the other may loathe it. Compromise becomes a difficult albeit important piece of their relationship.

What is recommended in these situations, is for the couple to try new and undiscovered hobbies that they may not have previously considered, in an attempt to find something that both may enjoy. If this is not feasible or has not been deemed successful, then it is recommended that both members of the couple construct a list of date night ideas that they would enjoy doing with their spouse. These ideas can be ripped up into individual slips of paper or put on popsicle sticks in a jar for ease of use. Each week the couple should alternate whose jar or choices are used so that both partners have a turn at doing what they love and at compromising on a hobby with their significant other.
